We never know quite what we will need to rescue or care for and that means at the Shelter we are always looking for support and equipment. We launched our Amazon Wish List over 2 years ago and we all love it when items arrive that we desperately need. From animal feed to bowls to litter trays, a new dryer to cleaning equipment there are many items to choose to donate. We are slowly moving into the new facility and to run it efficiently we would love to have new equipment to help clean the many animal enclosures. "The new building is looking lovely and we now need the equipment to help care for all the animals that we will have housed within the new building." "We have over 400 active volunteers that help us each year, some giving up a few hours once a year to those that help nearly every day of the week." "The next volunteer induction evening is Wednesday 5th January at 6.30pm at the Shelter and they last around 90 minutes, and it is an excellent way to find out how you can help and make the first steps to get involved."
Volunteer Induction Evening Volunteer Induction Evening Wednesday 25th March 6.30pm On Wednesday 25th March at 6.30pm you can join us for the third volunteer induction evening of 2015. We are always looking for volunteers to help at the Shelter in a variety of roles. Volunteers helping raise funds for the GSPCA Animal Shelter Guernsey You need to be at least 14 years old to help at the Shelter. If you are younger then you could still help. If you talk to your parents or guardians they may help you with fund raising for the Animal Shelter. To get started in Volunteering at the GSPCA we hold Induction Evenings and no matter your age there is always a way you can help. If you are looking to complete your work experience, Duke of Edinburgh or similar placement it is a requirement to attend one of the sessions to arrange a start date and complete the induction. We are especially looking for volunteers that can help us on reception to answer the phone and also for night wardens who can help ensure we can provide 24 hour emergency services for the animals of Guernsey. For reception we are looking for volunteers that can help between 9am and 5pm Monday to Saturday to work alongside our reception team. The night warden service that we have run for over 40 years involves manning the GSPCA ambulance between the hours of 6pm and 8am the following morning collecting strays as well as sick and injured animals. Another role we are always looking for help with is around our grounds with the gardening and ensuring we keep the place looking nice for the visitors and animals. The Volunteer Induction Evenings for 2015 will take place on the following days in the Event and Training Room at the GSPCA. Wednesday 630pm 25th March Wednesday 630pm 6th May Wednesday 630pm 3rd June Wednesday 630pm 6th July Monday 3pm 20th July Monday 3pm 27th July Wednesday 630pm 9th September Wednesday 630pm 30th September Wednesday 630pm 14th October Wednesday 630pm 25th November Volunteer Inductions take place in the training room at the GSPCA. Please report to reception for directions. The induction lasts about 80 minutes and at the end of the evening you have a chance to talk individually to a member of the GSPCA team. Steve Byrne GSPCA manager said "It is always lovely when we hold the volunteer inductions as we get to meet wonderful people that really care for animals and want to help us help them." "We have a fantastic team of volunteers and we really appreciate all of the hard work they put in." "We are appealing for volunteers to help on reception and around site with the gardening, as well as with the animals." "We are also looking to find a couple of individuals that may like to help cover our out of hours warden service which we have been running for over 40 years." "The next induction evening at the GSPCA is at 6.30pm on Wednesday 25th March and if you would like to find out how you can help then please do come along." GSPCA Cupcake Week 2015 Bakers! Shakers! & Cupcake Makers! Mark it in your calendars – The sweetest week of 2015 will fall between the 27th April and 3rd May. So start thinking and planning out your creations and let’s make this the biggest year for animals in the care of the GSPCA. Register & Send us your details of your event so we can include it on our fundraising page 2. Send the fundraising page to all your friends and family 3. Download resources 4. Bake up a storm 5. Add donations through the fundraising page 6. Choose a winner in your own cupcake competition Choose Wisely Eggs – Choose Wisely on Cupcake Week!GSPCA chickens - choose free range When baking cupcakes for GSPCA Cupcake Week it’s important to use eggs that have come from free range or cage-free farming systems. Cupcake Week raises funds to help the GSPCA fight animal cruelty – so by baking cupcakes using cage-free eggs you’re not only raising much needed funds for the GSPCA but helping get hens out of cages at the same time. There is overwhelming scientific evidence to support the GSPCA’s view that hens do not belong in cages. Frustrated from an inability to express natural behaviours as simple as scratching in the dirt, caged hens suffer chronically throughout their short lives, millions around the world exist in less space than an A4 piece of paper! Steps to remember when choosing eggs for your cupcakes Step 1 Avoid buying cage eggs all together. If it doesn’t specify the production system then it’s safe to assume the eggs were produced by hens in cages. Step 2 Look at the label. What you’re looking for are certified barn-laid, free range or organic. Certification means that the standards to which eggs were produced are publicly available and you can then decide whether you find the hen’s living conditions acceptable or not. Step 3 Be discerning. If in doubt, ask your store manager where the eggs have come from and how the hens have been housed. Remember, you have the power to help get hens out of cages! Thanks for supporting Cupcake Week for the GSPCA and thanks for Choosing Wisely. Fairtrade Guernsey The GSPCA would also like to encourage you to use Fairtrade goods where possible. By changing to Fairtrade, you can change the lives of farmers and producers across the developing world. If more people change to Fairtrade, it demonstrates our support for producers and expresses our dissatisfaction with the unfair trade rules that currently keep millions of people in poverty. A simple action like buying Fairtrade can trigger a positive change in peoples’ lives in developing countries as well as sending a message to our own leaders that we want change in global trade rules. Planning your Cupcake Party Planning Your Cupcake Party in 5 easy steps! Step 1 – Mark your calendar Cupcake Week for the GSPCA is officially held between Monday 27th April and Sunday 3rd May. If you’re unable to be involved on this week you can hold your Cupcake Party anytime in March or April. Once you’ve worked out the date, time and location of your Cupcake Party, mark it on your calendar and start brainstorming some ideas for fabulous, creative cupcakes! Step 2 – Register online Register online by emailing fundraising@gspca.org.gg or contact the Shelter. Cupcake Week raises funds to help the GSPCA fight animal cruelty – so by baking cupcakes using cage-free eggs you’re not only raising much needed funds for the GSPCA but helping get hens out of cages at the same time. For our vegan and vegetarian supporters there are many great recipes online. We would also like to encourage you to use Fairtrade goods as the GSPCA believes in. Step 5 – Decorate your Cupcake Party & Choose A Winner To make your Cupcake Party extra special why not decorate your venue with GSPCA posters, pictures of animals and don’t forget the purple theme. Also to add some fun why not judge which is the best cupcake. Fundraising Tips Pawsonalise the online fundraising page. Send us photos and messages (photos of you, your furry loved one(s) or perhaps a team photo) and we’ll include them on the Cupcake Week web page. Let everyone know why you’re baking and raising funds for the GSPCA – your supporters are more likely to donate if they can understand your story and why Cupcake Week is important to you. Chocolate is especially toxic to many animals! Here’s a simple recipe for dog ‘pupcakes’ so your canine pal doesn’t feel left out! Pupcakes Here’s a dog-friendly pupcake recipe you can use on Cupcake Week. Remember, pupcakes are special treats and shouldn’t be fed to your dog regularly! This recipe makes around 12-14 pupcakes.GSPCA Cupcake Week Guernsey Ingredients 2 ¾ cups water ¼ cup unsweetened apple sauce ¼ cup oats 4 cups wholemeal flour 1 cup dried apple pieces (you can also use a fresh apple) 1 teaspoon baking powder 1 free range egg, beaten 4 tablespoons honey Method Preheat oven to 175 degrees Celsius. Spray muffin tins with cooking oil. Mix all wet ingredients thoroughly. Combine dry ingredients in separate bowl. Add wet ingredients to dry ingredients slowly and using a wooden spoon, mix ingredients well to make sure no dry mixture is left. Pour into mixture into muffin tins and bake for 1 ¼ hours. To check if ready, insert a kebab stick into the centre of one of the pupcakes. If the stick comes out dry, the pupcakes are ready to come out of the oven. If not, bake for another 10 minutes and re-check using method described. Place on a cooling rack or wooden board until cool and then serve one to your pup! Store extra pupcakes in a sealed container. http://www.gspca.org.gg/page/gspca-cupcake-week

Liberation Stalls on the Seafront & at the Last Post - raising funds to rebuild facilities that date back to the 1950's This Saturday as part of the Liberation Day celebrations the GSPCA will have a stall both along the Seafront in St Peter Port and also at the Last Post in St Andrews. Both stalls will be manned by volunteers selling GSPCA goods and have fun games and tombolas. Every day it costs around £2000 a day to care for the hundreds of animals at the GSPCA and ensure we can provide a 24 hour 7 day a week service. Not only is it a big year celebrating the 70th Liberation Day, but it is also a huge year for the GSPCA as we rebuild many of the facilities that date back to the 1950's that were rebuilt after the second world war. Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said "Although at the GSPCA we've been on site here in St Andrews since 1929 the Shelter was leveled during the second world war and we have many buildings that were put up quickly shortly after we moved back on site nearly 70 years ago." "We are currently undertaking the biggest rebuild project in our history and to help raise the funds for our new multi-purpose animal welfare building we will have a stall along the seafront in St Peter Port and at the Last Post." "Please do pop by our stalls and support the team fund raising towards this much needed build and the care of the hundreds of animals in our care like Pepper the turkey, Chance the rabbit Lilly the cat, Zigzag the baby bird and many more." If you would like to help at either event we'd love to hear from you. On Sunday choose, cut or dig up your very own locally grown Blue Spruce Christmas Tree Have you ever been and chosen your very own locally grown Christmas tree in Guernsey? This Sunday the GSPCA will be at a location to be released on Saturday where you can come and choose from 900 locally grown Christmas trees. The Blue Spruces make fantastic festive trees and what better way to choose a tree fresher than any you may have had before. We will also be selling a small selection on Saturday from our Market stall in St Peter Port and will have one on display at the Shelter from Friday. The tree's have been growing for the last 8 years on island and vary in size up to around 6 feet. The owner of the land and trees has been waiting a long time for this moment and will be replanting Christmas tree's in the field once they have all been homed for Christmas. The owner has kindly donated the tree's to raise funds for the Shelter and we will be asking for minimum donations on Sunday and at our stall and indeed at the Shelter from next week. Donations can be taken not only in cash but also by using our online paypal link via your phone on the day. So why not bring your family on Sunday to choose your locally grown Christmas tree. Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said "We rehome all sorts of animals from the GSPCA and this Sunday we will be rehoming locally grown Christmas tree's which all look fantastic from tall bushy one's to small stubby one's." "We are hugely thankful to the owner of the land who has spent the last 8 years growing the tree's and is looking to replant more next year." "On Saturday we will release the location of where they are and on Sunday between 10am and 4pm the GSPCA team will be manning the field to help you choose your tree." "You will be able to cut the tree yourself, dig it up with its roots or a team member can do it for you." "The money raised will not only go back towards planting more tree's for future years the vast majority will go towards helping the hundreds of animals at the GSPCA this Christmas." If you would like to be emailed the location on Saturday please let stevejbyrne@gspca.org.gg know or even order a tree to be delivered next week if there are any left. We will release the information online on Saturday through our website and social media. Prices will vary on sizes and also be released on Saturday but this is a unique chance for your family to do something very special this Christmas. Delivery can also be arranged in addition. http://www.gspca.org.gg/blog/gspca-animal-advent-calendar-day-2-sunday-choose-cut-or-dig-your-very-own-locally-grown-blue-sp
